BikeMaster ReBuild: 1973 Kawasaki H1 500 Triple

BikeMaster ReBuild: 1973 Kawasaki H1 500 Triple
By Steve Mayes June 12, 2018

We’ve had a couple of cool BikeMaster project bikes recently that received a lot of good feedback from followers and dealers that stopped by the BikeMaster booth at our recent Brand and Dealer Expo. Restoring a Yamaha YSR-50 and a Suzuki RM-100 were very enjoyable, and both have their unique fan appeal.

So, for our next project, we decided to go bigger! We wanted to find a cool bike that would bring back great memories—and maybe even a few fears. The bike that came to mind does both: the Kawasaki H1 500 triple. The H1 was indeed a giant killer back in the day, and its reputation as a “flexi-flyer” preceded its notorious three-cylinder two-stroke engine. The Honda CB750 couldn’t hold a candle to the excitement the H1’s 500cc two-stroke motor delivers. And because we’ve wanted to do a BikeMaster build of a larger, street-legal two-stroke for some time now (mainly because they are becoming so rare) we feel like the Kawasaki H1 500 triple is the perfect bike for this fun new build.

1973 Kawasaki H! 500 Triple

Our stock (except for the intake stacks) 1973 Kawasaki H1 500 triple ready for a new life.

We stumbled across our H1 by word-of-mouth, and as it turns out was acquired from the original owner and was bought in early 1973. Now don’t get too excited for us just yet because this beast needs a lot of work. Our H1 sat in a garage for well over ten years and unfortunately, the old owner parked it right next to a window. The original lime green sides of the tank now look almost mint green. Every nut and bolt will need to come off to restore this one.

However, we feel the same as you: a bike as iconic as the Kawasaki H1 500 triple deserves to have a second chance and a new lease on life. Like our last project bikes, our goal is to rebuild our H1 to as close to its original form as possible—without breaking the bank. And with the help of BikeMaster, we will be able to accomplish our goals. Be ready in the coming months to check back here to the BikeMaster Blog as we share progress updates about this fun new build
